Within 30 years of its founding in New York in 1976, Liz Claiborne had grown into a massive fashion house that generated more than $5 billion per year in sales, and offered a staggering range of different high fashion and luxury goods to suit all tastes and needs. As one of the largest independent fashion and design companies in the world, Liz Claiborne has produced some of the most successful and popular fragrances in the world today, as well as many highly desirable clothing lines that are able to flatter the wearer without overwhelming their natural shape or beauty.
One of the most important aspects of the Liz Claiborne design ethic, and indeed one of the cornerstones of their entire success is that the person should define the clothing, not the other way around. The wearer should be designed for, and should feel at home and comfortable in the clothes that they choose, and should never for a moment feel that they are being outshone by the items of couture that they are wearing.
The Liz Claiborne Company owns a number of sub brands, which are often seen as being almost throwaway in nature. Lines such as Juicy Couture, which makes comfort suits and pseudo sports wear in garish colors has been extremely popular with younger women, who have seen the clothing worn by pop stars and other fashion leaders. Liz Claiborne has always taken the opinion that certain trends have a limited lifespan, and rather than risk the main brand on a fad, has been more inclined to produce such clothing on a sub brand to take full advantage of the trend without exposing her treasured signature label to the vagaries of the temporary.
Liz Claiborne clothing may well be about the individual, and the designer may eschew the trends of the year with her principal lines, but this is not to say that the clothes that she designs lack the edge of other designers’ lines. They do not. Liz Claiborne has a true eye for style and designs her clothes to be timeless at the same time as they are of the moment. It is common to see a Liz Claiborne couture dress on Oscar’s night, only to find that the item is twenty years old, yet still looks like it has been designed for this season.
Unfortunately, Liz Claiborne herself died in 2007 of cancer, but before she did, she left the company in very safe hands and with a clear creative direction that is to continue her work for the future in order to protect and build upon her unique legacy.
