From the time it was first founded by legendary designer Marcel Rochas in 1925 until the label was cut off in 2006 by current brand owners Procter and Gamble, the Rochas design and fashion house had been known as one of the most innovative and exciting couturiers in the world, producing some of the most stunning clothing. Marcel Rochas himself saw fashion as a means for the individual to express themselves through the clothes that they wore, and to this end, throughout his career, he focused on producing clothing that not only flattered, but also enhanced the femininity of women.
Marcel Rochas reveled in the idea of being at the cutting edge of fashion, and is credited with a number of important firsts including the 2/3 length coat - a design that he pioneered. He was also responsible for the then revolutionary idea of putting pockets in skirts in order to make them more practical, without compromising on the way that they flowed when worn.
Rochas deemed accessories as important as the principal item in an outfit, and created entire costumes for women and men to wear. His attention to detail was legendary, and he would build the entire outfit on a single theme, drawing the various elements together so that the whole was more than a sum of the individual parts.
The evolution of Rochas’ whole outfit concept was his move into fragrances, and this reached its zenith with the launch of the Rochas Femme signature fragrance. The perfume by Rochas, which came in an iconic pink package with black lace detailing became one of the most popular fragrances of all time, and is still widely sold to this day.
When the Rochas label was taken over by its last creative head, Olivier Theykskens, he moved away from the concept of whole outfits, and focused on turning Rochas into one of the most exclusive labels on the planet, but without the support provided by lesser lines and high street version of his designs, the profit margins provided by Rochas clothing were not high enough for the accountants in Procter and Gamble. After 4 of the most successful years in the company’s history, Rochas clothing was unceremoniously killed off, leaving Rochas perfumes as the sole reminder of one of the leading designers of all time.
