Marc Jacobs Designer Info

Marc Jacobs was influenced by fashion from an early age, and after graduating from the Parsons School of Design in New York in 1984, it was not long before he released his first line of clothing - a range of knitwear for the Reuben Thomas Sketchbook label. This proved extremely popular, and Jacobs was offered a position at the firm, but he already had his eye on bigger things, and formed a collaborative partnership with Robert Duffy, another young designer. Together the two men set about creating a fashion line that they could be proud of, building upon the basis of creating clothing that they themselves would want to wear.

An early accolade for Marc Jacobs was the prestigious Perry Ellis Gold thimble award - awarded to the most promising student of the year - which he won in 1984, in the same year, he also received the Chester Weinberg Golden thimble award and was named design student of the year. The first time that all 3 awards had been made to the same person.

Marc Jacobs was immediately sought out by the leading design houses in New York, and worked briefly at Perry Ellis before he was fired for producing a grunge inspired collection for the otherwise staid label. He also worked briefly at Tristan Russo as well with a couple of other companies before he and Robert Duffy set up his own label under the patronage of Louis Vuitton.

The two Marc Jacobs lines, including his fashion range of Marc by Marc Jacobs feature designs that stand out from the crowd, and contain the same humor and expressiveness as his catwalk creations.

Amongst his many successes as a designer, the Marc Jacobs’ Graffiti bag for Louis Vuitton, and being the designer chosen to produce the legendary French brand’s first clothing collection.

Named as the 8th most powerful man in the USA by Out magazine in 2006, Marc Jacobs is now a designer at the top of his game, and with the proposed launch of his watch range, and the naming of Michael Stipe from the rock band REM as his controversial muse, it is likely that the designer has plenty more to offer in the coming years.
