In 2008, the French jewellery house Boucheron will celebrate its 150 anniversary at the absolute forefront of the luxury world. Since it began in 1858, the French company has been responsible for creating some of the most elegant and sought after jewellery designs the world has ever seen. To this day the designs from the early days of the business are immensely popular around the world, and attract enormous prices whenever they come up for auction.
Frederic Boucheron was one of the originators of the Art Nouveau movement in France, and pioneered the use of natural elements in jewellery including snakes and other animals. He was one of the most innovative jewellers of all time, creating all manner of new techniques to push the boundaries of design and production in order to ensure that he would be able to truly create the designs that he saw in his mind.
As with all the other great French luxury houses, Boucheron turned to fragrances in a bid to expand their line of products and appeal to a wider audience. The rationale behind the expansion in to fragrance was that it would open up the brand to people who could not previously afford to enjoy the luxury of a Boucheron product.
Amongst the most popular perfumes that Boucheron has produced, the Parfum Bijou was perhaps the most important for the company, and even the whole industry.
Ironically, the introduction of the perfume brand, which created a whole new audience for Boucheron led to the launch of a more affordable range of jewellery under the Bijoux label. This new collection was intended to bring the design ethic of the main line to a popular audience, and has succeeded beyond the wildest estimates of the designers.
The most important aspect of the Boucheron design ethic has always been its preparedness to take the capacity of the materials they use to the absolute limit in order to approach the ultimate goal of producing jewellery that is audacious, attractive, and striking. Jewellery that is able to inspire numerous imitators and yet always remain sufficiently special for the imitation to fall short of its inspiration.
