As one of the most innovative and important fashion designers of all time, Jean Patou single handedly reinvented the idea of fashion following on from the first world war, redefining all the different aspects of the clothing world, and creating entire new industries to support his vision. He was the first creator of the designer tie, and recognized the importance of complementary color in creating a balance between a man and woman when they are together, and is widely credited with developing most of the modern dress styles.
The visionary style of Jean Patou was in many ways responsible for the development of the fitted look of clothing for women. He developed a new look that gave birth to the styles used by women in the Charleston era, and also played a role in producing a number of frocks that were worn in movies of the time.
Jean Patou is said to have invented the designer tie. He matched fabrics that he was using for women’s dresses and sold them alongside the dresses. This eye for business was what gave Patou the idea to move into the fragrance industry.

Other classic perfumes include Sublime, which is a much more musky scent, ideal for women to wear in the evening thanks to its very sensual tones. The house of Patou was saved from bankruptcy thanks to its range of perfumes, which protected it during the depression of the 1920s and 30s, and to this day the label is still creating new perfumes to appeal to a wider audience than ever before.
Unfortunately, at the height of his abilities in 1936, Jean Patou died at the age of 56 before he could really enjoy the fruits of his success, although his genius and innovation led to people enjoying the opportunity to feel beautiful in his clothes and fragrances.
