Unlike many of the other top perfume makers and designers who have turned their hands to the production of fragrance, the Lalique brand has never really been about the scent that comes within the bottle. Their main concern has always been with the bottle itself. For more than a century, the classic glasswork and incredible detail of Lalique perfume bottles has been the main reason why they are so sought after by people around the world.
The founder of the label, Rene Jules Lalique first came to prominence as a jeweler working at companies including Cartier and Boucheron - his work from this period is listed as some of the most collectible of all time, and incredibly rare. It was in 1890 that he first struck out on his own, when he began to work on a freelance basis producing high quality designs in glass that celebrated the elegant and stylish Art Nouveau movement.
Lalique products were an instant hit, and quickly became one of the hottest items of the day amongst well heeled Parisians. The range of products that Lalique produced was quite extensive, but the most popular items were the small detailed perfume bottles, which featured stunning cut glass designs. His name became synonymous with the creativity of the era, and his work was very sought after.
As the century turned, and fashions changed to the more austere and elegant Art Deco era, Lalique became something of a design superstar. His impeccable designs were imitated by many, and his original work commanded huge value. He produced the designs used on the SS Normandie - the most luxurious liner of its day, and practically defined the era in terms of his enormous influence as a designer. His work, which often took the natural world as an inspiration was amongst the most important of the era, and it was his keen eye for detail and creative sensibilities that came to set out some of the most important movements in design during the twentieth century.
To this day, original Lalique products are highly collectible, and command high values at auction, and while the company is still in existence, and still produces a number of lines, most aficionados of the brand will still seek out the original work of the founder as well as the modern collectibles, which retain the influence of Rene Jules Lalique as an integral part of their appeal.
