Before Mariella Burani entered the world of fashion as a designer, she had aspirations of becoming a primary school teacher, but meeting her husband, who was the general manager of the Burani Garment Group, changed the direction she was to take in her life.

She was at the top of her game, designing clothing for Italian children in the late 60s and into the 70s. Inspired by their innocence, Burani fulfilled somewhat a dream she had when she was a child, that of becoming the king of all the children. After 1975, she headed up the entire company.

When the German photographer Peter Lindbergh entered the scene, Marialla Burani experienced more fame than she had ever been used to before. Lindbergh told her that seeing her clothing reminded him of both his grandmother and mother, but this time assembled on a contemporary girl who liked to wear army boots.

Her designs were inspired by the years she spent in Reggio Emilia schools, something she had done from the fifth grade. The school clothing for the girls, covered in light shades of gray, and the women in nearby Cavriago working the fields of rice paddies working hard, fused together to define Mariella Burani's design creativity.

Combining her fashion designs with Peter Lindbergh's black and white photographic style helped to create the Mariella Burani woman, defined as a woman going places, who is not afraid to both cry and laugh, who still dresses like women do, but can mix it up into men's looks if they chose to do so.

These days the company bearing her name creates and distributes around the globe a diverse yet modern scope of luxury goods, from clothing and footwear to jewelry and accessories designed in leather. It also carries merchandise from other designers on the international markets under licensing agreements.

The company began in 1960 by Walter Burani, and is known today for being well entrenched in the sale of luxury items. It can point directly to its diversification of product lines, expansion and being able to penetrate the market for its impressive growth in revenue. Another example of smart business moves is when Burani acquired various smaller companies which specialized in areas such as jewelry, leather and Italian goods.

The goal of the Burani Group is to become the leader in the luxury marketplace, which it hopes to make accessible to the world, through not only its innovative product designs, but also its brand and its distribution network which even now stretches around the world.
