Throughout his 68 year life, Pierre Balmain sought to create absolute perfection in design and elegance for his clients, and was rewarded by becoming one of the leading fashion designers in the world. His clothing and other creations being sought after by the most beautiful women in the world, who craved his attention and wanted to benefit from his eye.

Pierre Balmain believed that fashion design was all about movement rather than simply shapes. He designed clothes that moved and complemented the whole woman all of the time rather than just in the studio. He designed clothing that was as elegant as it was functional, and believed that lightness in all aspects of the design would allow it to be free for the wearer to enjoy.

Balmain thought that a holistic approach to fashion was essential. He wanted to dress all aspects of a woman, and to this end decided that he needed to expand to all other areas of couture and opened a perfumery.

The perfume business quickly became one of the most important aspects of his business, and by the middle of the 1940s, Balmain’s signature scent Vert Vert was amongst the most popular fragrances in the world.

The striking lines of his clothing were naturally suited to the movement of actors in both the cinema and on stage. Balmain creations appeared in many movies in the 1960s, including ‘The Millionaires’, where he dressed the beautiful Katharine Hepburn, and won awards including a Tony for costume design in 1980 for the play ‘Happy New Year’.

The popularity of Balmain luxury products such as perfume and clothing grew over time, and his reputation for producing perfection grew with it. Over the years, the label won many awards, and by the time of its founder’s death in 1982 it was one of the leading brands in the fashion world.

Even with the founder gone, Balmain continued to ride high in the fashion world, and created new perfumes and fashions that held true to the ethic of the genius of Pierre Balmain, and continued to attract the attention of all true followers of high fashion.
